Build a Pergola
We moved in about a year ago and knew we would have to do something with
the back yard. Building the pergola was the first step. This is a very heavy
duty construction built with 6" x 6" x 12' posts and 2" x 8" x 14' & 16' cross
members. This is a 10' x 12' pergola measured from the inside of the posts.
Remnants of the old deck
Pegged and squared off where to dig for the posts
Getting ready to dig into these stones mixed with red dirt
Not even close to deep enough
3 x 80lb bags of concrete per hole
After the concrete dried I brought in the weekend crew
Double cross members bolted in with 10" long 1/2" galvanized
Work around technique clockwise using a level, starting at the
front and only taking one height measurement
Used a jigsaw for the rounded pattern cuts. We used special
joist brackets to hold the top cross pieces on (16" centers)..
Added additional diagonal support. Don't know what they call
these.
